Brent Robitaille

Composition and Arranging

Composer Bio

Brent Robitaille is a composer who started his musical journey at age seven. Trained in classical and jazz guitar, piano, and violin, he realized at age 16 that only one career path rang true.

For three years, he began studies with Dr. Samuel Dolin in his hometown of Midland, Ontario, working on an A.R.C.T in composition from the Royal Conservatory of Music. During this time, several of his pieces were performed, including “Triptych” for choir and synthesiser, the guitar suite “Thirteen,” and “Asteroids” for prepared piano and drums.

After a year studying jazz guitar at Humber College in Toronto, Brent moved to Montreal to study at McGill University with Professor John Rea, Brian Cherney, and German guitarist Edda Bissinger. At McGill, his first string quartets were written and performed, “Onieros” for piano and soprano was performed, and he performed with the McGill concert choir heard on the CBC New Music series.

Brent finished his composition studies, earning a bachelor’s degree from York University, where he studied with James Tenney and Michael Coghlan. During this time, Violin Sonata #1 was written and performed, “Complaint Dept.” for electronics, “Transformations” for electric guitar, bassoon, and tenor vocalist, and “Points” for 16-piece chamber orchestra.

Brent graduated from York University and became a full-time musician, composer and teacher, playing up to 200 times per year in many capacities, including theatre, television, bands, and recording session work on guitar, bass, piano, mandolin, violin, pedal steel and vocals.

He has arranged hundreds of pieces for various ensembles and soloists, recorded on over 40 albums, written over 50 books and is the CEO of Kalymi Publishing. He is working on Violin Sonata #2, a multi-synthesizer piece titled “Synthiatia”, and recording the recently completed double guitar orchestra piece “One Second to the Future.” His music was recently performed in New Jersey, Phoenix, Los Angeles (“Cairo”), England and Italy (“Starry Night”).

” Music is the composer’s mirror, reflecting the depths of their soul, echoing emotions they dare not speak, yet cannot bear to silence. “
