My musical journey had begun…
Brent C. Robitaille is a music educator and composer who has spent over 35 years bridging research and practice in music education.
As a researcher, Brent co-authored a peer-reviewed study on emotional expression in music composition published in Empirical Studies of the Arts (1992), which has since been cited 220 times in academic literature on music cognition and emotional communication.
As an educator, Brent has published over 60 instructional books, reaching more than 40,000 students internationally, and has YouTube tutorials viewed over 10 million times. His work focuses on making music accessible to self-taught learners through alternative instruments (cigar box guitar, open tunings, looper pedals) and teaching methods (tablature, video instruction) that are often overlooked in traditional music education.
Brent holds degrees from York University and attended McGill University, Humber College, and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. He is a member of SOCAN and has received funding from the Ontario Arts Council for original composition.
To make it easier to know what to practice next, Brent has been building structured Learning Paths that connect free lessons, books, printable resources, and step-by-step practice systems. Current examples include the Open Tunings Guitar Learning Path, the Cigar Box Guitar Learning Path, the Looper Guitar Learning Path, and the Ukulele Learning Path.
