Is the Mandola the perfect Celtic instrument?

Tuned a fifth lower (CGDA) and about 2 inches longer than a mandolin, the mandola is excellent for Celtic music as a solo or band instrument.

The Celtic Mandola Music Book is packed with great tunes, chords, exercises, and technique tips, adding to a limited selection of books. This book was written specifically for the mandola and will help you get the most from the alto voice range. The mandola is akin to the viola in the string orchestra but can also be an excellent solo instrument. Blends well with guitars, violins and other string instruments.

There are two editions for sale of this book, one written in treble clef and the other in alto clef. Choose which edition best suits your reading skill. Notation, tablature, chords, fingerings and slurring are included in the over 40 pieces. Highly recommended for all mandola players!  There is a selection of audio and video tracks below.

Grab your mandola and let's play some jigs and reels!

The Celtic Mandola Book is a complete method and tune book for the 4-string mandola tuned to CGDA. Tablature, chords, technique. Alto clef edition.

The tunes represent a good selection of well-known Celtic session tunes, including jigs, reels, hornpipes, waltzes and songs.  Each tune shows notation, tablature and chords.  Some tunes are arranged in the chord melody style (with pick), while the faster tunes just have the melody line with fingerings and articulations.

If you are new to this style, check out my twelve tips for Flatpicking and how to use ornamentation to further embellish the tunes.

I have also included a mandola chord and fretboard page with 96 of the most common chords, fingerboard charts, and the major and minor scales and arpeggios with fingerings.  There are also Celtic strumming patterns in 4/4 and 6/8 time and how to accompany.  A complete method and one of the only books written specifically for the 4-string mandola tuned CGDA.
