What Is Slide Vibrato?
Slide vibrato is a repeated movement around a target pitch while the note sustains. Because a slide is not locked to the frets, the player controls the centre pitch, speed and width continuously.
Establish the Pitch First
Place the slide directly over the fret and hold the note in tune before adding movement. A vibrato that begins before the pitch is established can sound like an inaccurate search for the note rather than an expressive choice.
Speed and Width Are Separate
Speed describes how quickly the slide moves. Width describes how far it travels below and above the target. Practise narrow and wide movements at slow and fast rates. Keep the motion balanced around the centre rather than allowing the average pitch to drift sharp or flat.
Use the Wrist, Not a Tight Grip
Keep the fingers relaxed and allow the hand and wrist to guide the slide. The thumb may act as a light anchor or pivot behind the neck. Excess tension makes the motion uneven and can push the slide too firmly into the strings.
Place Vibrato within the Phrase
Vibrato is most effective on notes long enough for the listener to hear its shape. Delay it after the attack, begin immediately, or change its speed as the note develops. Record the phrase and judge whether the vibrato strengthens the melody or appears automatically on every sustained note.

Slide vibrato is created by moving the slide back and forth around the target fret rather than holding it perfectly still. Keep the wrist loose and use the thumb as an anchor or pivot against the back of the neck. The motion should come from the hand and wrist rather than from tightening the fingers.
Practise the speed and width separately. Speed is how quickly the slide moves, while width is how far it travels on either side of the target pitch. A narrow, fast vibrato creates a different effect from a wide, slow vibrato.
Vibrato can give a sustained slide note a vocal quality, which is especially effective on melodies such as “Sleepwalk.” Do not add it automatically to every note. First place the slide directly over the fret and establish the centre pitch, then add vibrato deliberately to longer notes or important phrases. It can soften small imperfections in movement, but it should not be used to hide consistently inaccurate slide placement.
