What Are Guitar Tuning Machines?
Tuning machines are the geared mechanisms used to tighten or loosen the strings and bring them to pitch. They are also called tuners, tuning pegs or machine heads. Most guitars have one tuning machine for each string, mounted on the headstock.
Turning the button rotates a string post through a gear system. The string wraps around or locks into that post. Small post movements create controlled changes in tension and pitch.
Parts and Common Types
A tuning machine normally includes a button, shaft, gear, housing and string post. Open-gear tuners leave the gear visible. Sealed tuners enclose it in a housing. Classical guitars often use side-mounted machines with rollers on a slotted headstock, while steel-string and electric guitars commonly use upright posts.
Locking tuning machines clamp the string at the post. They can make string changes faster and reduce the number of wraps required, especially on guitars with vibrato systems. They do not lock the guitar permanently in tune, and they cannot correct friction at the nut, unstable strings or an improperly set bridge.
How to String a Tuning Machine
The string should enter the post cleanly and wind downward in neat coils without overlapping itself. The downward path helps maintain a suitable break angle over the nut. Too many wraps can create slack and make tuning less stable, while too few may allow the string to slip.
After installing a string, bring it gradually to pitch, stretch it gently and retune. Always know which post controls the string you are adjusting. Turning the wrong machine under tension is a common cause of broken strings.
What Causes Tuning Problems?
Players often blame the tuning machines first, but the cause may be elsewhere. New strings continue stretching, poorly wound strings can slip, nut slots may bind, a floating bridge can move and changes in temperature can affect pitch. A tuner that feels smooth and holds position may be functioning correctly even when the guitar drifts.
Actual machine problems include loose mounting screws, a wobbling post, excessive gear backlash, stiff or uneven movement and a gear that slips under tension. Tighten only the correct external hardware and avoid overtightening. Some enclosed units are not designed for home lubrication.
Replacing Tuning Machines
Replacement tuners must match the post diameter, mounting-hole size, screw or locating-pin pattern, headstock thickness and left-right orientation. A set that looks similar may still require drilling or enlarging holes. Measure first and preserve original parts when working on a valuable instrument.
Why Tuning Machines Matter
Good tuning machines make small pitch adjustments predictable and hold the string securely. They are one part of a complete tuning system that also includes the string winding, nut, bridge, setup and the player’s method of tuning.

Each button should move the pitch predictably without grinding, sudden jumps or visible post movement.
Tune up to the note from below whenever possible. If you pass the target, lower the pitch slightly and approach it again. This takes slack out of the winding in a consistent direction and gives you a clearer test of whether the string and machine are holding.
If the pitch jumps with a small ping, the problem may be the string catching in the nut rather than the tuner slipping. If the button turns but the post does not respond, or the machine moves in the headstock, the hardware itself needs attention.
